Welcome to Island Krk
The island of Krk is located in the Primorje-Gorski kotar area of the Kvarner Gulf, which is the largest croatian gulf. The island is densely populated and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the northern Adriatic Sea due to its proximity to the mainland. The island is connected to the mainland by the Krki Most (the Krk Bridge), making it quite accessible. When the bridge was completed and made transportable in 1980, it was the largest ferroconcrete arc in the entire globe. Boats were utilized to travel to and from the island prior to the completion of the construction. It is 1.5 km long and only shuts down during buras, which are extremely powerful winds.
We may say that Krk has a rather decent geographical position because it is located approximately 150 kilometers from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, 130 kilometers from Lubljana, Slovenia, 100 kilometers from Trieste, Italy, and four hours from Vienna, Austria. In fact, tourism had already begun to grow by the end of the 19th century, long before any contemporary roads, bridges, etc. had been built. We shouldn’t be surprised by the early tourist interest in Krk, especially in light of the area’s pristine landscape, beautiful towns, and rich cultural and historical heritage. Nevertheless, Draica’s first beach was already overrun with tourists in 1910.
With a surface size of 405.78 km2, Krk was long believed to be the largest island in the Adriatic. However, more recent studies have revealed that the adjacent island of Cres now has an equal surface area. Krk is the most populous island in the Adriatic, with a total of about 20,000 people living in its many towns and villages.
